DR “Historie & Tro” in Denmark has during the past year been experimenting with visual experiences addressed towards pupils og how VR can be used as an optimal supplement to the traditional form of history class. Christopher Schnoor from DR and his coworkers experienced how VR has a certain role in situations of learning. The experiment was about letting a primary school teacher teach two groups of pupils in the subject “Pestilence in the Middle Age,” where one group had an ordinary TV-experience, while the other group had a VR-experience with the subject.
VR has by many been called a ‘machine of empathy’ and it is true that with the ability of VR to feel intimacy with the characters of the film, there follows a strong foundation of compassion. VR also concerns the possibility to let the audience experience places and situations, which they otherwise never could have experienced and that has a huge potential. In our Danish history VR-project, we created a modern time machine, which gave the audience an opportunity to become transferred to another time and place, explains Christopher Schnoor.
Christopher Schnoor and his coworkers experienced how VR can have a huge potential within the teaching area, because the pupils’ interest for the history course actually got strengthen, by the feeling of compassion that they felt during the VR-experiences.
In a history narrated in Virtual Reality, you can make the onlooker a part of the story and to be centered in the narrative. It creates the feeling of compassion, says Christopher Schnoor.
